Base44 builds apps, websites and AI agents from plain-language prompts, with a backend, database, storage and authentication included1. Founded in 2024, it was acquired by Wix in June 2025 for an initial payment of $80 million plus milestone payments2.

Best for: Quick internal apps and prototypes for a small team, with a built-in database, authentication and hosting in one subscription.

Not the right fit for: Systems that need large data sets in one view, enterprise connectors such as Salesforce or SQL, or SSO without an Enterprise plan.

What Base44 builds

A Base44 app arrives with its data store, logins and hosting in the same subscription. Building is billed in message credits and what the app does (backend operations, integrations) in integration credits34. Connectors to Gmail, Outlook, Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, Snowflake and Databricks start on the Builder plan, and custom integrations can be added from an OpenAPI specification5.

Two limits matter for company systems. A single data request returns at most 5,000 records on every plan6. And access depends on rules the builder sets: Base44 supports row-level rules (such as "creator only") and role-based rules, but its documentation warns that badly configured permissions can let the wrong people view or change data, and the "All Users" option allows actions without signing in7.

Security

Base44 states that it holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, stores data in the US by default with other regions on Elite and Enterprise, and gives each app a security tab that checks for vulnerable dependencies, exposed secrets, missing login checks and weak access rules8. App SSO requires a Business or Enterprise plan; the Business plan is referred to in the documentation but not shown on the public pricing page93. Escape's 2025 research included about 159 Base44 apps among the 5,600 public apps it analysed10.

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • Everything needed for a first internal app is in one plan: database, authentication, hosting and AI.
  • Row-level and role-based data rules, plus a per-app security tab that checks for exposed secrets and weak access rules.
  • Vendor-stated SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, with region choice on Elite and Enterprise.

Limits

  • A single data request returns at most 5,000 records on every plan.
  • Its documentation warns that badly set permissions can let the wrong people view or change data; the "All Users" rule allows actions without signing in.
  • App SSO needs a Business or Enterprise plan, and the Business plan does not appear on the public pricing page.
  • Connectors start on the Builder plan and do not list Salesforce, HubSpot or SQL databases.

Choose another option if: The app must read large tables or existing business databases. Retool or Softr connect to those directly.

Pricing

Published, billed annually: Starter $16, Builder $40, Pro $80 and Elite $160 a month, with message and integration credits. Enterprise on request.

Questions to ask Base44

  • Which plan includes SSO for our staff, and what does the Business plan cost?
  • How will screens that list more than 5,000 records behave?
  • Which data rules does the generated app use by default, and how do we test them for each role?
  • Which of our existing systems can the app connect to on our plan?
