Retool has built internal tools on company data for years; its AI now generates those tools from a prompt. The distinguishing claim is that generated apps are scaffolded from the real schema, roles and permissions, and respect existing SSO, role-based access and data-level permissions by default1.

Best for: Companies with existing databases and APIs that want governed internal apps built on live production data, by a few builders for many users.

Not the right fit for: Teams with no database or technical owner, or buyers who need SSO and self-hosting without an Enterprise contract.

What Retool builds

Retool's AI prompts full-stack apps on live production data in sources such as Postgres, Databricks and Salesforce1. Alongside apps, it offers workflows and agents that combine language models, code and human steps1. It can also import React apps built in Lovable or Replit2.

The model is a few builders serving many users. Pricing is set per builder and per internal user, with external users (clients or partners) tiered separately on the Business plan3. Permissions scale with the plan: Free and Team have only fixed All Users and Admin groups, while Business adds custom groups, organisation and object roles and per-environment access to resources4. SSO, SCIM, Git source control and self-hosting are Enterprise features; self-hosted deployments run as a Retool-managed single tenant on AWS or self-managed on Kubernetes35.

Its earlier AI assistant, Assist, is no longer available in the classic app builder for most instances, according to a changelog entry dated 30 September 20266. Buyers comparing older reviews should note the change.

Published evidence

  • Ramp. Retool reports that Ramp built more than 100 internal tools in under a year, became up to 20% more efficient and estimates $8M in company-wide savings. Vendor-reported.7
  • Komatsu. Retool reports that Komatsu built call-centre automation in four weeks, cut email handling time from over seven minutes to about three and projects more than 22,000 hours saved a year from a pilot. Vendor-reported.8

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • Generated apps are scaffolded from the real schema, roles and permissions, which addresses the most common failure of AI-built apps.
  • Connects to existing databases and APIs rather than creating a new data store.
  • Business adds custom permission groups, object roles and audit logs; Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM, Git and self-hosting.
  • Publishes named, quantified customer stories (vendor-reported), including Ramp and Komatsu.

Limits

  • Free and Team plans have only fixed All Users and Admin groups; custom permissions need Business.
  • SSO, Git source control and self-hosting require Enterprise.
  • Agents are billed separately by the hour, beyond a monthly free allowance.
  • Its earlier AI assistant, Assist, was withdrawn from the classic app builder in September 2026.

Choose another option if: Your data still lives in spreadsheets and nobody owns a database. Softr or OpenLazarus start closer to that point.

Pricing

Published in euros on the page we read: Team €9 per builder and €5 per internal user a month billed annually; Business €46 and €14. Enterprise on request.

Prices on Retool's page were shown in euros when we read it, which suggests the page is localised; buyers outside Europe should check the figures in their own currency.

Questions to ask Retool

  • Which of our data sources can the AI generate against, and which permissions does a generated app inherit?
  • Which plan do we need for custom permission groups and audit logs, and what does it cost for our number of builders and users?
  • How are agent hours metered, and what would one agent running all day cost?
  • What changes when we move from cloud to a self-hosted deployment?

See how Retool compares with the other builders in the main ranking.
