Softr review: AI-generated portals and business apps on your data
The easiest route to a portal or internal tool on data a company already keeps, with permissions generated alongside the pages. Less suited to complex logic or agents that do the work.

Softr builds business apps and portals without code. Its AI generator takes a prompt and produces the pages, the database, the user permissions and the workflows for an app, which can then be refined visually or by prompting again1.
Best for: Client portals, intranets and internal tools with logins and permissions, on data the company already keeps in Airtable, Google Sheets, HubSpot or a SQL database.
Not the right fit for: Complex custom logic, high-volume transactional systems, or companies that want AI agents to do operational work.
What Softr builds
The typical Softr app is a client portal, an intranet, a CRM or an internal tool with logins. Data can live in Softr Databases or in more than 20 native sources, including Airtable, Google Sheets, HubSpot, Salesforce, Notion, monday.com, Supabase, a SQL database or a REST API; Snowflake and BigQuery are reserved for Enterprise2. That makes it a practical first step for a company whose process already lives in a spreadsheet or Airtable base: the data stays where it is and gains an interface with permissions.
Access is managed through user groups. Rules that restrict who can view records apply on every plan, while rules that restrict who can create, edit or delete records require the Business plan or above3. SSO, SCIM, audit logs and access to the SOC 2 report are Enterprise features4.
AI features draw on a monthly credit allowance (10 on Basic, 50 on Pro, 100 on Business) that does not roll over; when it runs out, AI features pause rather than incurring overage5. Softr was founded in 2020 and describes itself as remote-first6.
Published evidence
- Minerva Network. Softr reports that Minerva Network cut administrative workload by 70% and increased athlete registrations by 50% with an app built on Softr. Vendor-reported; the full story was not reviewed.1
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- Permissions are part of what the AI generates, not an afterthought, and user groups are built in.
- Leaves data where it already is: Airtable, Google Sheets, HubSpot, Salesforce, Notion, Supabase, SQL or a REST API.
- No code to maintain: changes are made in a visual editor or by prompting again.
- AI credits stop when exhausted rather than billing overage, which keeps the bill fixed.
Limits
- Create, edit and delete data restrictions require the Business plan or above.
- Users are capped by plan; Business includes 30 team users and 100 client users before add-ons.
- Snowflake and BigQuery as data sources, and SSO, SCIM and audit logs, are Enterprise features.
- Monthly AI credits are small (10 on Basic, 100 on Business) and do not roll over.
Choose another option if: You need AI to carry out work on the records, not only an interface over them, or you have no existing data source. OpenLazarus covers both.
Pricing
Published: Basic $19, Pro $99 and Business $329 a month billed annually ($25, $119 and $395 monthly). Enterprise on request.
Questions to ask Softr
- Which plan do we need so that client users can edit only their own records?
- What are the record limits for our data source on that plan?
- How many team and client users will we have in a year, and what do the add-ons cost?
- What happens to our app if we later move the data to another source?
